Angola; Bengo: Water Sector Gets USD 7 Million
Around USD 7 million is being invested this year, in the northern Bengo province for the construction and improvement of drinkable water collection, treatment and supply systems.

According to the National Director of the Water Department, Armindo Gomes da Silva, who worked for some hours in the localities of Catete (Icolo e Bengo district) and Caxito (Dande district), USD 3 million of the 7 million invested was allocated to the Icolo e Bengo water system, and the remainder will benefit the Dande district.

The works that started last April are under the management of the Chinese "China Exportation Corporation" firm that intends to end the work in 18 months.

MINING NEWS

Angola/Huíla: Seven Firms Confirm Participation in Mining Exhibition
Seven ornamental-rock exploration firms that operate in Angola's southern Huila Province have confirmed their participation in the national mining exhibition, in celebrations of the Miner's Day, April 27.

The list of firms registered, includes Rocksul, Agostone, Angorochas, Lisgran, Galiangol/Omphunda, Metarochas and Rodang. These firms will display derivatives of products they explore through exhibitions in Luanda.

There are more than 15 mining exploration firms in Huíla, most of them in the areas of ornamental rocks and others associated with prospecting of diamonds, gold, nickel, bronze and iron.

Twenty cubic meters of black and rose granite are produced every year, in the Huila Province, that are exported to Europe and America, earning a profit of approximately USD 2 million.

Jewelry Auction Main Attraction of Mining Exhibition
The International Mining Exhibition (FIMA) had a jewelry auction with USD 1 million worth of goods on display.

The auction was open to exhibitors and visitors and included various types of jewelry, such as earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets.

The event is the first of its kind and was attended by 120 countries from the mining sector that include Endiama and its subsidiaries, "Sociedade Mineira de Catoca" (SMC), "Sociedade de Desenvolvimento Mineiro" (SDM), De Beers, Leviev, SML, Ferrangol, "Nova Cimangola", ITM and the banks BFA and BAI.

Apart from the diamond sub-sector, the exhibition was counting on the participation of representatives of firms involved in exploration of iron ore, gold, manganese, copper, ornamental rocks and others.

Mining Exhibition Business Volume Reaches USD 30 Million
The International Mining Exhibition (FIMA), in Luanda, reached a volume of business estimated at USD 30 million.

The deputy minister of Geology and Mining, Mankenda Ambroise, stated that, "the efforts permitted us to close the event with encouragement and very high expectations."

The official highlighted the merit of the gala dinner, that raised, through a diamond jewelry auction, a USD 105,000 fund for the Lwini Foundation, intended to assist Angolan children.

According to the deputy minister, FIMA accomplished revealing Angola's great mining potential and investment opportunities to the public.

One-hundred and twenty firms attended the event from the mining sector, diamond lapidary, trade, jewelery and equipment manufacturers.

Livestock
There is expanded support to grow the livestock industry across the country. From the production of meat from cows, goats, sheep, pigs, guinea pigs and rabbits to the production of eggs and leather goods the support is geared toward maximizing the benefit for rural families and increasing the employment of dislocated and demobilized people.

Fishing
Angola's vast rivers and ocean access, not to mention climate, make it an ideal location for expansion of the fishing industry. Both the 'catch' and 'derivatives' segments of the industry hold room for growth.

Although oil and diamonds don't contribute directly to food security they are the foundation upon which the Angolan economy firmly built. These sectors must be followed closely due to the impact they have on the macro economy. The development and support of diverse industries throughout rural Angola will be a catalyst for ensuring all people in the community, especially the most vulnerable, have reliable access to good nutritious food into the future.
